Bassi’s Bill to Protect Children
from ID Theft Signed into Law
Springfield, IL (June 17, 2005) Legislation sponsored by State Representative Suzie Bassi (R-Palatine) requiring child support income withholding notices to be devoid of the child’s social security number was signed into law Friday.
“Income withholding notices are provided to employers when a parent has not been paying their portion of child support,” said Bassi. “This new law requires child support administrators to exclude the child’s social security number on these notices to protect young citizens from fraud and identity theft crimes.”
Bassi said the bill is part of her ongoing efforts to stop identity theft and move towards more security for social security numbers. Bassi held an Identity Theft Response & Prevention Seminar in April where participants learned how to prevent becoming a victim of this type of crime.
“Since 2003, the Chicago and surrounding area has seen a 15 percent increase in identity theft,” said Bassi. “This new law is one more step towards curbing this increase and protecting our most vulnerable citizens from this type of crime that can damage an individual’s personal and financial records.”
